8 Natural Remedies for Heartburn During Pregnancy

Heartburn during pregnancy is usually caused by relaxation of the stomach muscles and increased pressure in the stomach due to the enlarged uterus. This allows regurgitation of the stomach contents into the lower oesophagus.

These simple lifestyle modifications can provide some relief:

  1. Avoid eating fatty, fried, creamy, or spicy food, and chocolate.
  2. Avoid acidic juices and carbonated drinks.
  3. Eat smaller more frequent meals.
  4. Sit upright during and after eating.
  5. Avoid eating before your bedtime.
  6. Keep your head elevated when sleeping by placing bricks beneath the legs at the head of your bed, or a foam wedge under the mattress.
  7. Avoid stooping, slumping and bending over suddenly.
  8. Avoid wearing restrictive clothing.

If these measures are not sufficient, there are some over-the-counter remedies available, but always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication while pregnant.

Antacids are often recommended by doctors, provided you have normal kidney function and do not use
them for extended periods of time. Sodium-containing antacids, however, should not be used during pregnancy.

Antacids alter the absorption of certain nutrients like iron, so if your doctor has prescribed an iron supplement, ensure that there is a two-hour interval between your antacid and iron tablet.
